IOWA Exams Begin!
Each spring, Sacred Heart's 2nd through 8th grade students take the Iowa Assessments. The Iowa Assessments are achievement tests, which means they are designed to test student knowledge in certain subject areas. Students are tested in the following general areas: reading, writing expression, math, computation, science, social studies, and vocabulary.
The second grade students will also be taking the Cognitive Abilities Test or CogAT tests. These tests measure students' reasoning abilities in three areas: verbal, nonverbal and quantitative.
In order to help your child feel prepared and confident about the Iowa and CogAT assessments, do not place too much emphasis on the tests, which may make a student feel anxious or stressed. Instead, maintain a typical schedule and atmosphere at home during the testing time, and make sure your child gets a sound sleep and healthy breakfast each day. Please make sure your students come to school on time with a healthy snack and a bottle of water, as well as a couple good pencils and an eraser. Like all school activities and academics, students should be encouraged to do their best!
