Sacred Heart Saints Prayer During Lent

For our alms-giving this season of Lent, the Student Government Association, SGA, is asking our community to donate long sleeve t-shirts for migrant farmers as they work in the fields with exposure to sun and chemicals. SGA went around and spoke with the students to educate students about this need.

Today, as we prepare to enter into our fourth week of Lent, we ask the Lord to help form a new heart within us. Let us pray:

"God of all,
the love of your Son led him to accept
      the suffering of the cross
that we might glory in new life.
Help us to be like Christ your son,
who loved the world and died for
      our salvation.
Inspire us by his love,
      guide us by example.
Change our selfishness into self-giving.
Help us to embrace the world you have given us,
that we may transform the darkness of its pain
into life and joy of Easter. Amen.

Third Graders Learn about Southeastern Guide Dogs
As part of their Catholic Social Teaching Principal, Rights and Responsibilities, the 3rd grade students choseThe Southeastern Guide Dog School for their "Pennies From Heaven" charity.  Many of the students performed extra chores at home, donated birthday money, and asked family members to help them raise funds to help support the guide dog school.  After reading the story, "Thank you Mr. Falker" the students have come to understand that with rights, come responsibilities.  Jesus has taught us that people who already have what they need are called to help others.

Mr. Zuniga, a volunteer for Southeastern Guide Dogs, visited the 3rd grade class with his Ambassador Dog Bernie!  Bernie cheerfully demonstrated many commands, gave hugs and hand (paw) shakes, and delighted the class.  Mr. Zuniga was very impressed with the generosity of the Sacred Heart community, and thanked the students telling them their donations ($358 wow!!) make a great difference and will help a person who is sight impaired regain their independence!  Not only is it our responsibility to help others, but it is also our honor.
     -Mrs. Mueller

Jesus wants the people who already have
what they need to help these others. We call this a "responsibility"

Sacred Heart Saints Prayer During Lent

During this second week of Lent, our student leaders led the school through a reflection on Jesus' encounter with the Samaritan women. As  we prepare for this Sunday's gospel. Students were encouraged to engage, talk or sit with someone they do not usually interact with. How can we encourage this in our children?

Today, as we prepare to enter into our third week of Lent, we ask the Lord to help form a new heart within us. Let us pray:

"God of all compassion and goodness,
to heal the wounds our sins and
    selfishness bring upon us
you bid us turn to fasting, prayer, and
    sharing withour brothers and sisters.
We acknowledge our sinfulness,
our guilt is ever before us.
When our weakness causes discouragement,
let our compassion fill us with hope
and lead us through a Lent of repentance
to the beauty of Easter joy.
Grant this through Christ our Lord."

Additional Information for March 5th, 2017

IOWA Exams Begin!

https://image.freepik.com/free-vector/writting-pencil-design_1095-187.jpg

Each spring, Sacred Heart's 2nd through 8th grade students take the Iowa Assessments. The Iowa Assessments are achievement tests, which means they are designed to test student knowledge in certain subject areas. Students are tested in the following general areas: reading, writing expression, math, computation, science, social studies, and vocabulary.

The second grade students will also be taking the Cognitive Abilities Test or CogAT tests. These tests measure students' reasoning abilities in three areas: verbal, nonverbal and quantitative.

In order to help your child feel prepared and confident about the Iowa and CogAT assessments, do not place too much emphasis on the tests, which may make a student feel anxious or stressed. Instead, maintain a typical schedule and atmosphere at home during the testing time, and make sure your child gets a sound sleep and healthy breakfast each day. Please make sure your students come to school on time with a healthy snack and a bottle of water, as well as a couple good pencils and an eraser. Like all school activities and academics, students should be encouraged to do their best!
